Signs You Have a Refrigerant Leak

We are heading toward the end of another cooling season and there’s no doubt your air conditioning system has worked hard to keep your home in Maitland, FL cool and comfortable all season long. It isn’t unusual to see problems arise with your AC system at this time of year after all the work it has done. We know that many people are still using their air conditioning systems, so you want to stay extra vigilant about potential problems arising. One of the more common repairs we see at this time of year is refrigerant leaks, so here are some warning signs you may have one:

Hissing or Bubbling Noise

You won’t hear this sound through your ductwork, but you may hear it near your indoor air handler or your outside unit. A low-level hissing or bubbling sound can be indicative of a refrigerant leaks because your refrigerant is under pressure. When a leak develops, the refrigerant escapes through the small opening, and the refrigerant can bubble while air escapes, which creates a hissing sound.

Lack of Cool Air

Another sign you may have a refrigerant leak in your air conditioning system is when you encounter a lack of cool air or a total loss of cool air coming through your vents. The reason this happens is that refrigerant leaks create an imbalance in the heat release/cooling process in your system, and the heat doesn’t release enough to allow for cooling. The result is warm air blowing into your home.

Ice Build-Up on the Coils

Refrigerant leaks can also cause a build-up of ice on your indoor (evaporator) coils. This is also caused by the heat release/cooling imbalance induced by the refrigerant leak. Simply scraping the ice off isn’t the solution – the leak needs to be repaired.

Refrigerant leaks need to be repaired by a person with certification, and our experts have both the training and certification necessary to do so. Are you seeing the signs of a potential refrigerant leak? Then give us a call today!
